Sparks - No. 1 In Heaven (1979)

Virgin - V2115
1979
1. Tryouts For The Human Race
2. Academy Award Performance
3. La Dolce Vita
4. Beat The Clock
5. My Other Voice
6. Number One Song In Heaven
-
I've seen Sparks twice in concert in the last week, so it's only right to add them to Vinyl Shipwreck! This is their interesting Synth/Pop phase, in which they changed musical direction brilliantly through the aid of Giorgio Moroder. The title track is now legendary, but you'll also love "Tryouts For The Human Race" and "Beat The Clock", as well as the Blade Runner-esque "My Other Voice". Enjoy! Like always!

Bob Crewe - Motivation (1977)

Elektra - 7E-1103
1977
1. Motivation
2. Give It Hell
3. Lady Love Song
4. It Took A Long Time
5. Marriage Made In Heaven
6. Somethin' Like Nothin' Before
7. In Another Life
8. Baby Whatcha Doin' A Me?
9. Merci Beaucoup

-
Bob Crewe, songwriter, arranger, producer, label owner and here a brilliant late-seventies Lounge singer! Motivation is a lovely little rarity, featuring a warm title track and the semi-hit "Marriage Made In Heaven". If you love Bob Crewe arrangements and songs for other artists, then you should be snapping this up!

Tommy Roe - Dizzy (1969)

ABC/Paramount - ABCS-683
1969
1. Heather Honey
2. Raining In My Heart
3. Cinnamon
4. A Dollar's Worth Of Pennies
5. Stormy
6. Makin' Music
7. Money Is My Pay
8. Proud Mary
9. Gotta Keep Rolling Along
10. Look Out Girl
11. Dizzy
-
One-hit wonder Tommy Roe would never reach the heights of "Dizzy" again, but that doesn't mean his same-titled album should be overlooked. I particularly like "Stormy", which sounds like a "Spooky" rip-off, and Roe's cover of "Proud Mary". Either way, this album's here if you want it!

The Mamas And The Papas - People Like Us (1971)

Dunhill - DSX-50106
1971
1. People Like Us
2. Pacific Coast Highway
3. Snowqueen Of Texas
4. Shooting Star
5. Step Out
6. Lady Genevieve
7. No Dough
8. European Blueboy
9. Pearl
10. I Wanna Be A Star
11. Grasshopper
12. Blueberries For Breakfast
-
Virtually ignored in the seventies, The Mamas & The Papas churned out, in my opinion, their strongest effort with People Like Us. More relaxed, taken musical notes from The 5th Dimension and even Sergio Mendes, the foursome deliver a cool, soulful but stirring album. For standard cuts, I can tell you "People Like Us", "Snowqueen Of Texas" and "Step Out" have been in constant rotation on my iPod.

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77 - Pais Tropical (1971)

A&M - SP 4315
1971
1. PaĆs Tropical
2. So Many People
3. Morro Velho
4. Zanzibar
5. Tonga
6. Gone Forever
7. Asa Branca
8. I Know You
9. After Midnight
-
Another sterling collection of contemporary hits from Sergio Mendes and his rejigged outfit Brasil '77. Pais Tropical came out of the back-end of the soft-pop latin-tinged efforts from the sixties with Mendes broadening his horizons, like "So Many People" and Paul Williams "Gone Forever". There are better Mendes albums, but this is interesting as a mid-discography event.

Shirley Bassey - Something (1970)

United Artists - UAS 29100
1970
1. Something
2. Spinning Wheel
3. Yesterday I Heard The Rain
4. The Sea And Sand
5. My Way
6. What About Today?
7. You And I (From The Mgm Film 'Goodbye Mr. Chips')
8. Light My Fire
9. Easy To Be Hard (From The Musical 'Hair')
10. Life Goes On (From The Film 'Z')
11. What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life? (From The Mgm Film 'Happy Endings')
12. Yesterday When I Was Young
-
A powerpack of dynamite from Miss Bassey here - I'd argue this is her finest album! Why? Because each song appears to have been processed through the James Bond Genre Sound funnel and all amount to a belter collection! How about the ending of "Something" or "What About Today?" Even the slower numbers like "Easy To Be Hard" have that lush stringed early-seventies gold taste. Pow!

Carpenters - Lovelines (1989)

A&M - AMA 3931
1989
1. Lovelines
2. Where Do I Go From Here
3. The Uninvited Guest
4. If We Try
5. When I Fall In Love
6. Kiss Me The Way You Did Last Night
7. Remember When Lovin' Took All Night
8. You're The One
9. Honolulu City Lights
10. Slow Dance
11. If I Had You
12. Little Girl Blue
-
Ok, you know this one came out after Karen Carpenter died and is made up of outtakes and remixes; yet trust me when I say the songs are BRILLIANT! One of my favourite Carpenters albums, you'll love "Lovelines" or "Slow Dance" or even "Honolulu City Lights". This has lush eighties production with strong seventies Karen. Don't say you weren't informed!

Art Garfunkel - Fate For Breakfast (1979)

CBS - 86082
1979
1. In A Little While (I'll Be On My Way)
2. Since I Don't Have You
3. And I Know
4. Sail On A Rainbow
5. Miss You Nights
6. Bright Eyes
7. Finally Found A Reason
8. Beyond The Tears
9. Oh How Happy
10. When Someone Doesn't Want You
11. Take Me Away
-
The lovely Art Garfunkel, everyone knew he was the voice and Paul Simon was the songwriting genius, and yet I'd take Art's solo output over Paul's anytime!! This is my fave Art album; sun-drenched beach-house-pop/rock that really caught everything at the tail-end of the seventies. "And I Know" and "Sail On A Rainbow" are lush gems - think of this album as a more saccharine companion to Dennis Wilson's "Pacific Ocean Blue".

George McCrae - Rock Your Baby (1974)

Jay Boy - JSL 3
1974
1. Rock Your Baby
2. I Can't Leave You Alone (I Keep Holdin' On)
3. You Got My Heart
4. You Can Have It All
5. Look At You
6. Make It Right
7. I Need Somebody Like You
8. I Get Lifted
9. Rock Your Baby (Reprise)
-
One-hit wonder George McCrae is probably responsible for one of the earliest entries of Disco in Rock Your Baby; no wonder considering all of the songs were penned by Casey & Finch of KC & The Sunshine Band. It sounds like a demo album, often with guitar and beat box backing tracks, but with strong cuts as the full-length "Rock Your Baby" and "Make It Right" it certainly proves to be an interesting snapshot into the birth of pre-synth Disco.

Lou Rawls - When You Hear Lou, You've Heard It All (1977)

PIR - PIR 82402
1977
-
1. Lady Love
2. I Wish It Were Yesterday
3. One Life to Live
4. Dollar Green
5. Trade Winds
6. There Will Be Love
7. Unforgettable
8. That Would Do It for Me
9. I Coulda', Woulda', Shoulda'
10. Not the Staying Kind
-
Another sterling Lou Rawls effort, a singer whose best period for me was his Philly Soul phase! Nothing will beat All Things In Time but here's a worthy follow up. For stand-out cuts, check out the first two tracks, but the whole album is gold! Ah Lou, I wish you were still here....

David Gates - First (1973)

EMI - K 42150
1973
1. Sail Around The World
2. Sunday Rider
3. Soap (I Use The)
4. Suite: Clouds, Rain
5. Help Is On The Way
6. Ann
7. Do You Believe He's Comin'
8. Sight And Sound
9. Lorilee
-
Many write off Bread purely because most of their hits were ballads, but front man David Gates was easily one of the strongest songwriters of the seventies. Here's his debut solo album, entitled First, and it's a good effort, particularly the long "Suite: Clouds, Rain" and the "Ghetto" sounding finale "Lorilee". Clearly, this was an opportunity for Gates to flex his musical muscles and gravitate slightly further from the Bread sound.

America - America (1971)

Warner - K 46093
1971
1. Riverside
2. Sandman
3. Three Roses
4. Children
5. Here
6. I Need You
7. Rainy Day
8. Never Found The Time
9. Clarice
10. Donkey Jaw
11. Pigeon Song
-
People often write off America as CSN wannabes, but in my opinion both bands are in a class of their own, and not many albums are better than America's debut self-titled effort. Kick-starting right in with "Riverside", easily the rockiest acoustic number you'll ever find, the quality stays throughout both sides, with classics like "Sandman", "Children" and "Never Found The Time". I saw America in concert last year and they rocked! More albums to come at a later date, but for now, here's the opener!

Sorry for the delay....

I ordered a new AT440mla cartridge and it was a bloody pain to install....Think I've cracked it now after severing wires, fudging the install and aligning the cartridge!!! Cannot wait to get back to plain old recording again!! BIG SIGH

Friday, 11 April 2008

My realisation....

Ok, I've loved "ripping" vinyl and sharing it for all fellow muso's. However, it's occurred to me that I've been trying too hard to make my rips sound like CDs, cleaning them up and flattening out the sound, when actually I like the sound of hiss and crackle, and feel that I'm closer to the original time-capsule that is the vinyl record, rather than removing the sound of all of its antique heritage.

So, from now I'll be physically cleaning my records like always, but I won't be adding any plug-in digital effects afterwards, except raising the volume by 6dB. I like the original dynamic range of analogue records, I don't want to try and churn out sub-CD mp3s instead. Sorry if you object to this - I've listened to lots of rips this week without any digital clean-up and most sound better, and lack that Dalek-voice sound that some of my digitally-cleaned vinyl rips sound. I might even go back and re-upload some of my albums.

Thanks for all of your comments - keep 'em coming!!

Anyhoo, normal sharing album service resumes this weekend I promise, and here's a taste of what I'm bringing:

Jackson 5ive - Skywriter
John Williams - E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
Liz Damon - Me Japanese Boy (I Love You)
America - America
Wings - Venus And Mars

Vinyl-Shipwreck

PS - Was a big, big fan of Charlton Heston and very sad to see him go. You owe it to yourself to watch these films:

Planet Of The Apes (1968)
The Omega Man (1971)
Soylent Green (1973)
Ben-Hur (1959)
The Ten Commandments (1956)
Touch Of Evil (1958)

MCA - MCF 2501
1973
01. My Love
02. Two People Clinging To A Thread
03. Half-Breed
04. Greatest Song I Ever Heard
05. How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?
06. Carousel Man
07. David's Song
08. Melody
09. The Long and Winding Road
10. This God-Forsaken Day
11. Chastity Sun

Another strong album from Cher in her fantastic early-seventies period. Spawning the US Billboard number one title track and a nice little pair of McCartney numbers; not to mention the brilliant album cover art. This is a real must for fellow genre enthusiasts.

Lindsey Buckingham - Law And Order (1981)

Mercury - 6302 167
1981
1. Bwana
2. Trouble
3. Mary Lee Jones
4. I'll Tell You Now
5. It Was I
6. September Song
7. Shadow Of The West
8. That's How We Do It In LA
9. Johnny Stew
10. Love From Here Love From There
11. A Satisfied Mind
-
If Tusk is my favourite album of all time then it is no surprise that I love Lindsey Buckingham too. Aside from the 2007 Under The Skin album, this is Buckingham's best effort - nicely combining the new-wave sensibilities of Talking Heads with Beach Boys harmonies. It's a jaunty little selection of tracks - I love the sped-up "That's How We Do It In LA" and punchy "Mary Lee Jones". Not for everyone, but everything for me at least!

Carly Simon - Come Upstairs (1980)

Warner - K56828
1980
1. Come Upstairs
2. Stardust
3. Them
4. Jesse
5. James
6. In Pain
7. Three Of Us In The Dark
8. Take Me As I Am (Or Let Me Go)
9. Dessert
-
I love albums where the original artists dramatically switches style, and here Carly Simon, fresh from singing bond themes and singer-songwriter material trades all of it in for hard-robotic-rock-and-pop! The sound of the tracks don't always work, but "Them" and "Come Upstairs" are strong efforts, and I this is one record whereby the analogue synth effects are helped by not being digital. Check it out!

Lou Rawls - All Things In Time (1976)

PIR - 33957
1976
1. You're The One
2. You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine
3. Time
4. Groovy People
5. Need You Forever
6. From Now On
7. Pure Imagination
8. This Song Will Last Forever
9. Let's Fall In Love All Over Again
-
I've listened to Lou's smooth vocal tone many times over the years, but this is my fave album of his - a nice hybrid of Philly soul and lounge, with some good choice cuts such as "Pure Imagination" from Willy Wonka and "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine". One of the best albums from 1976. Enjoy!

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Live At The Expo '70 (1970)

A&M - AMLS 989

1970
1. What the World Needs Now / Pretty World (Sa Marina)

2. Sergio Talks To Audience

3. Going out of My Head

4. Pra Dizer Adeus [To Say Goodbye]

5. (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay

6. Day Tripper

7. Fool on the Hill

8. Scarborough Fair

9. Norwegian Wood

10. Mas Que Nada

-

A lovely live album this, capturing Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 in their prime, performing at the Expo '70 world's fair. There are only nine songs featured but each are expanded and reworked, and there is a real audible sense that you are there watching a beautifully intimate show. I hope you enjoy it.

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - Warm (1969)

1969
1. The Sea Is My Soil
2. WIthout Her

3. Marjorine (Sol Lake)
4. Girl Talk
5. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
6. Zazueira
7. The Continental
8. Pretty World
9. Warm
10. To Wait For Love
11. Sandbox
-
I appreciate that there are a few rips of this album floating about, particularly as this is (for now) currently unavailable on CD. Anyway, this is my favourite HA&TTB album primarily for the brilliant opening track "The Sea Is My Soil". You'll also find some singing on some of the tracks, most notably Nilsson's "Withour Her". This album came out in 1969 just as the sound of the time was changing.

Carole Bayer Sager - ...Too (1978)

Elektra - K52093
1978
1. To Make You Smile Again
2. It's The Falling In Love
3. Peace In My Heart
4. Shadows
5. You're Interesting
6. There's Something About You
7. It Doesn't Add Up
8. I Don't Wanna Dance No More
9. One Star Shining
10. I'm Coming Home Again
-
More famous for his songs than her albums, Carole Bayer Sager went for the Carole King market in the late seventies and almost succeeded. This is her sophemore effort, and there are many fine songs on display - my faves are "It's The Falling In Love" and "I Don't Wanna Dance No More". Carole was married to Burt Bacharach for a time, and they shared an Oscar for writing "Best That You Can Do" from Arthur. Enjoy!

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk (1979)

1979
1. Over and Over
2. The Ledge
3. Think About Me
4. Save Me a Place
5. Sara
6. What Makes You Think You're the One
7. Storms
8. That's All for Everyone
9. Not That Funny
10. Sisters of the Moon
11. Angel
12. That's Enough for Me
13. Brown Eyes
14. Never Make Me Cry
15. I Know I'm Not Wrong
16. Honey Hi
17. Beautiful Child
18. Walk a Thin Line
19. Tusk
20. Never Forget
-
In my opinion, the greatest Non-Beatles album of all time, and certainly better than the White Album which it is often compared to, Tusk is a Fleetwood Mac masterpiece. Brutally slated in its post Rumours wake, the album lives in nearly thirty years later thanks to some brilliant new-wave Lindsey Buckingham songs and a fantastic breadth of songwriting across Buckingham, Nicks and McVie. The vinyl version has different mixes of some songs, in particular Buckingham's masterpiece "I Know I'm Not Wrong". I'd take this to a desert island if I were to be shipwrecked....

Tavares - Love Storm (1977)

Capitol - E-ST 11628
1977
1. Whodunit
2. Keep In Touch
3. I Wanna See You Soon
4. Fool Of The Year
5. Watchin' The Woman's Movement
6. One Step Away
7. Out Of The Picture
8. The Going Ups & The Coming Downs
9. Goodnight My Love
-
Although Love Storm doesn't contain either of the two biggest Tavares hits, it's certainly no lesser in songwriting quality. "Keep In Touch" and "I Wanna See You Soon" are two lovely soulful ballads that evoke strong late-seventies sound vibes, and there isn't a weak track alongside them.

1969
1. I Am A Cathedral
2. Sons Of Cane Are Abel
3. No More Lollipops
4. Stay Within Myself
5. You Are My Life
6. Sayonara
7. Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)

10. Once Upon An Everyday
11. Mary Jane
12. Time Was Leading Us Home
13. Many Covered Semi Precious Plastic Easter Egg
14. Time, Love, Hope, Life
-
Now back in vogue thanks to movie director Wes Anderson, Peter Sarstedt captured a moment in time in the late sixties with his startling number one single "Where Do You Go To (My Lovely". Here's his debut album, containing that song and a host of others in the folk/pop genre. Donovan probably was worried for a brief moment....

Billy Paul - When Love Is New (1975)

1. People Power
2. America (We Need The Light)
3. Let The Dollar Circulate
4. Malorie
5. When Love Is New
6. I Want 'Cha Baby
7. Let's Make A Baby
-
My favourite Billy Paul album, seven cuts but all deliver that expert blend of Philly Soul-meets-Funk. "People Power" and "Malorie" are very good, but my personal favourite is album closer "Let's Make A Baby", which despite the cheesy intentions is one of the better late-seventies soul numbers. The shores of Vinyl Shipwreck aren't biased - we display whatever washes up!

1. Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair)

We're having a synth-pop EMI 1983 moment today at Vinyl Shipwreck, this time with Sheena Easton, who like Kim Carnes turned out a host of quality albums but is slightly overlooked in today's climate. Best Kept Secret is one of Sheena's stronger efforts; if you don't believe me check out the brilliant sample track "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie"!

11. Let's Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye
12. Winter World Of Love

Engelburt delivers the goods here with some fine renditions of the big hits of 1969. The first side is standard pop hits, with "Gentle On My Mind" and Jimmy Webb's "Didn't We", however the second side has a groovy, stirring "Aquarius - Let The Sunshine In" and ensures that there's more than enough for all of you Engelbert fans; I know there's lots of you as I saw the big man in concert last year and it was ace and like being at a religious sermon!

Yvonne Elliman - Love Me (1977)

RSO - RS-1-3018
1977
1. Love Me
2. Hello Stranger
3. I Can't Get You Outa My Mind
4. I Know
5. Without You (There Ain't No Love At All)
6. Good Sign
7. She'll Be The Home
8. (I Don't Know Why) I Keep Hangin' On
9. I'd Do It Again
10. Uphill Peace Of Mind
-
Most famous for singing on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack album, Yvonne Elliman turned in some great late seventies long-players that are quite hard to find now. I particularly like her version of the Bee Gee's "Love Me" and the nice analogue feel of "Without You". Track standout however is "Hello Stranger". As usual, do enjoy yourselves and please come again!

Paul Williams - A Little On The Windy Side (1979)

Portrait - PRT 83197
1979
1. Moonlight Becomes You
2. Little On The Windy Side
3. Save Me A Dream
4. For Goodness Sake
5. Brand New Song
6. Little More Like You
7. This Strange New Feeling
8. Here's Another Fine Mess
9. My Fair Shape
10. For The Life Of Me
11. Gift
-
This 1979 Paul Williams album is probably my least favourite, but still has lots to offer to any pop/rock fan. The fun seems to have disappeared from most of the numbers, but it's still a worthy effort.

Paul Williams - Just An Old Fashioned Love Song (1971)

A&M - AMLH 64327
1971
1. Waking Up Alone
2. I Never Had It So Good
3. We've Only Just Begun
4. That's Enough For Me
5. Perfect Love
6. An Old Fashioned Love Song
7. Let Me Be The One
8. Simple Man
9. When I Was All Alone
10. My Love And I
11. Gone Forever
-
I think this is the strongest Paul Williams album, with startling quality throughout. "We've Only Just Begun" was more famous as a Carpenters hit, but "Let Me Be The One" and the title track really render this a must-listen! Paul Williams is certainly a forgotten darling of the seventies!

Donny Osmond - A Time For Us (1973)

MGM 2315 273
1973
1. A Time For Us
2. Hawaiian Wedding Song (Ke Kali Nei Au)
3. When I Fall In Love
4. Are You Lonesome Tonight
5. I Believe
6. Guess Who
7. Young And In Love
8. A Million To One
9. A Boy Is Waiting
10. Unchained Melody
-
Donny was starting to come into his own and fully breakaway from the Osmonds' shadow in the early-to-mid seventies, and this is one of his better albums. Full of warm Osmonds-esque production values and nice pop ballads, this is a forgotten classic!

Tony Bennett - I've Gotta Be Me (1969)

CBS - 63685
1969
1. I've Gotta Be Me
2. Over The Sun
3. Play It Again Sam
4. Alfie
5. What The World Needs Now Is Love
6. Baby Don't You Quit Now
7. That Night
8. They All Laughed
9. A Lonely Place
10. Whoever You Are I Love You
11. Theme from "Valley Of The Dolls"

A good late-sixties set from Tony Bennett here, covering many standards of the day. "They All Laughed" is a notable inclusion, along with a few Bacharach/David numbers. There are still many Tony Bennett albums unreleased on CD, hopefully in time the net will be a comprehensive resource for them all. Anyway, enjoy!
